Thank you for your letter and enclosures of 12 June 2000 regarding the above URL.

Apart from Leicester City Council (LCC) noting “the extensive disclaimers and hyperlinks included on the website in question”, we do not feel that they are bringing anything new to this process and would refer them to our previous letter.

Our site is run in good faith and we don’t believe there could be any likelihood of users believing we are connected to LCC, other than by content. Surfers may well expect to find information about LCC because of our clear domain name... and they can. If users then decide they want the government site we offer “extensive hyperlinks” out to it. All official council sites end with gov.uk which means leicestercitycouncil.co.uk cannot possibly be an official site.

We do not own a URL domain name www.leicestersotherwebsite.co.uk as LCC believe - and so we cannot easily move there.

We would like to draw your attention to the ownership of six other citycouncil.co.uk domain names ie:

These sites have no connection with the city councils, nor are the contents anything to do with their names (unlike the leicestercitycouncil.co.uk theme). They are all in fact “jump” pages leading to domain name sales sites. Users going to these sites do not get useful information about their council and city - they get offered cheap domain names and website hosting.

It appears that others can own and run websites with a citycouncil.co.uk domain name for commercial purposes, yet we alone are to be victimised. We would like to know why?

We would like to help resolve this matter and would be very interested if LCC have any positive suggestions for a resolution. At the moment they only seem to be saying “get out”. Please contact me if I can be of any further help in attempting to resolve this situation.
