| The Westend of Leicester is now a
wall to wall rubbish dump thanks to the City Council's new policy of charging £15
for removal of bulky domestic waste. With the expansion of De Montfort Uni we now
have fewer families living in the Westend and a lot more students. When they leave at the
end of the year they have a lot of rubbish to dispose of - what won’t go in the bin
goes into front yards, pocket parks, in fact any bit of empty land. Students (who pay no
Council Tax) don’t have £15 to waste or the time to wait for a collection. |
| The landlords of these student houses
also pay no Council Tax or Business Rates and many are unwilling to pay £15 to get the
rubbish removed. Even if they are good landlords and phone the Council for a pickup, they
will have to wait up to ten days (according to the Council). In reality people have waited
up to three weeks, given up and done it themselves - meanwhile Council Tax paying
residents live in Environment City’s rubbish tip. |

| A resident who complains about
rubbish is told that the Council can’t collect rubbish from private land and the
request for removal has to come from the land owner. Since they don’t know who owns
the land they can do nothing. When is the Council going to do something to improve the
lives of people living in streets with student landlords? Landlords are making a lot of
money, creating an ugly unsafe environment and putting nothing back - most of them
don’t even live in the area. |
It
is very unfair that Council Tax payers should have to pay for the removal of this filth
while student landlords get off scott free. However, as the law stands, we will have to
pay if we don’t want our surroundings to become intolerable - as illustrated by the
